Tasting

Leaf

Orthodox Orange Pekoe grade long, wiry, twisted leaves. Dark brown to black with a slight sheen and the occasional golden tip. Larger and more open than most everyday blacks; it steeps a touch more slowly.

Aroma

A bright and clean aroma of warm malt and a light, honeyed sweetness with a faint citrus lift. Less heavy than an Assam, less smoky than a Keemun; brisk and fresh rather than deep.

Liquor

Bright golden-amber to light copper, clear and lively. Medium-bodied, smooth and brisk. A full-flavoured but never harsh tea; an easy, refreshing Ceylon that takes milk well but holds its own black.

Preparation

How to brew Ceylon Kenilworth

Kenilworth is a classic Ceylon black tea and simple to brew, near-boiling water and a few minutes is all it asks. Lengthen your steep slightly if you're planning to add milk.

Temperature 100°C / 212°F
Measure 2.5g per 250ml
Steep Time 3-5 min
Infusions 1
Brewer's Note

A straightforward, forgiving brew. Strong enough to stand up to milk well, so adjust the steep as preferred: shorter for a smoother black cup, a touch longer if you're adding milk.

Origin

Kandy

Elevation ▲ 600-1200m
Country Sri Lanka

Kandy sits in the central hills of Sri Lanka at mid elevation, roughly 600 to 1,200 metres, below the high-grown districts and above the lowlands. It was the first part of the island planted for tea, in the 1860s and 70s, after leaf rust destroyed Ceylon's coffee crop.

The Kelani Ganga and Mahaweli Ganga rivers flow down from the central mountains and the nearby Badupola forest reserve, creating a unique natural habitat that is ideal for producing high-quality Kenilworth teas.

The warmer, lower conditions produce a black tea that's fuller-bodied and stronger than the light, brisk teas of the high country, but smoother and less malty than a lowland Assam.
